History

Here you will find some information in general on the history of the Mini Clubman. Obviously, this is just a small highlight. With 41 years of continuous production behind it (Mini production in general that is), I definitely could not include everything. There's lots of books out there dedicated entirely to the history of the Mini, so if you want a detailed insight into Mini history, I suggest that you go out and get one of those books which have the added advantage of explaining things much better than me Smile One I highly suggest is The Complete Mini by Chris Rees from which I have taken much of the information exposed here.

What, you're still here? Ok then let's start.........

Mini Clubman and Clubman Estate (1969 - 1980)

The Clubman and Clubman Estate were launched in October 1969 along with the new MkIII Minis and sharing their improvements/differences from the previous Minis. The saloon was presented as a more upmarket Mini whilst the estate replaced the curretnly running Morris and Austin Mini estates.

Common to both versions of the Clubman was a compeltely revised front end. The front was extended and became squarer, new grille, bumpers, front headlamps/indicator units and rear 'Mini Clubman' badge.

With regards to the interior, the Clubman retained the the old Super De Luxe specification, but it had a completely redesigned dashboard. A new rectangular instrument nacelle, containing the speedometer on the left and combined fuel gauge/water temperature on the right, was introduced and moved in front of the driver. Also, for the first time in a Mini, the clubman introduced face level ventilation which actually worked. Other features where a unique trim, special contoured seats and its own three spoke steering wheel with a 'Clubman' badge on its centre.

The Estate came with the previous model's rear sliding windows. However, it was never available with the 'woody' rear trim. Instead, it came with a vinyl-coated steel fake wood trims extending the length of the vehicle. These were eventually replaced with contrasting coloured stripes. It also had both left and right wing mirrors where the saloon had none till a single door mirror was standardised across the Mini range in 1973.

While the Estate continued with the previous model's dry rubber-suspension, the Clubman saloon retained the hydrolastic suspension abandoned by most other Minis. It finally gave way to dry rubber in 1971.

Automatic transmission was available on both versions, but when the 1098cc engine was standardized on both models in 1975, the automatic version of the Clubman could only be bought with a 998cc engine.

Apart from interior changes and a minor facelift in 1976, the Clubman remained practically the same during its production life. Post-1976 Clubmans could easily be recognised by their cross-patterned grille.

The Clubman ended production in 1980 with the introduction of the Mini Metro, though the Estate was still available for a further two years.

Mini Clubman 1275 GT (1969 - 1980)

The poor 1275 GT was launched along with the Clubman to replace the unreplaceable; the Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S. Mini Cooper production ended along with the MK 2 Minis as a measure by British Leyland (BL) to cut production costs. Therefore the Clubman was not seen in a good perspective by the many Mini enthusiasts around the world. It received the standard 1275cc engine from BL's production line producing a mere 59 BHP, but with a close ratio gearbox. Performance went down in respect to the Cooper, but in its favour, it was also cheaper. The 1275 GT differed from the standard Clubman in that it had an extra instrument dial; a rev counter. Fron disc brakes from the Mini Cooper S were also fitted as standard. It also had a red GT badge on the front grille, new Clubman 1275 GT rear badge, a stripe just above the sill line with Mini 1275 GT decals, front disc brakes and Rostyle steel wheels.

In 1974, the Clubman was the first Mini to be equipped with 12" wheels from the factory along with larger (8.4") unservoed disk brakes. In general, the Mini 1275 GT shared the same changes as the standard Clubman with a few differences.

1970:

* Final-drive ratio changed from 3.65 to 3.44:1.

1974:

* Tempreature-controlled air intake system now fitted(power output now 54 BHP)..
* Larger non-servoed front disc brakes fitted with larger 12in wheels.
* New 7.5 gallon fuel tank.

1976:

* Old GT badge deleted from grille.
* New triped seats.
* Passenger's vanity mirror.
* Door pockets.
* passenger's door mirror.
* Handbrake grip.

1977:

* Denovo wheels and tyres standard.

1979:

* Black door mirrors and rain gutter standard.

1980:

* Mini 1275GT discontinued.

Total production: 110,673
